L’associazione culturale BAU produce e distribuisce dal 2004 Bau, Contenitori di cultura contemporanea, rivista d’assemblaggio annuale che raccoglie lavori multipli firmati e numerati di autori nazionali e internazionali. L’edizione 2020, BAU 17, è dedicata alle ONDE, the WAVES.

La ridondanza d’un tragitto, la ridondanza d’un ritmo, la ridondanza d’un gesto che diventa abitudine. La ridondanza delle parole, che succedendosi succedono. La ridondanza del vento, quando cambia idea improvvisamente. La ridondanza d’un motivo su un tappeto, o sulla carta da parati. La ridondanza d’una parola in certi discorsi. Ridendo, ridondano di buon umore. 

La successione ridondante d’un moto perpetuo, quello delle onde, quello del loro rumore. 

The redundancy of a path, the redundancy of a certain rhythm, the redundancy of a gesture becoming habit. The redundancy of words, which follow one another. The redundancy of the wind, when it suddenly changes its mind. The redundancy of a motif on a carpet or wallpaper. The redundancy of a word in certain speeches. Laughing, redundant in a good mood. 

The redundant succession of a perpetual motion, the one of waves, the one of their noise. 

Nella ridondanza riscopriamo una molteplicità, una cadenza ritmata. Un motivo si potrebbe dire, certo in chiave astratta e forse quasi simbolica. L’onda, ridonda. Da qui l’idea e la voglia di giocare sull’accumulazione del segno, sulla creazione di un pattern visivo in cui le parole appaiono solamente quando intersecano le linee del disegno sottostante. Alla base di questo insieme ritmato, unità fondamentale iterata e reiterata, la carta, la mappa. Quasi in incognito, la mappa dà forma al fondo, ritma il foglio, fa sorgere le parole spezzate. Ma non si tratta di una carta qualsiasi ebbene no, bensì di un’operazione cartografica per orientarsi tra le onde. 

In redundancy we rediscover a multiplicity, a rhythmic cadence. A motif, certainly in an abstract and perhaps almost symbolic key. The wave, redundant. Hence the idea and the desire to play on the accumulation of the sign, on the creation of a visual pattern in which words appear only thanks to their intersection with the lines. At the base of this rhythmic set, the map appears as the fundamental unit, iterated and repeated. Almost incognito, it gives shape to the background, it rhythms the paper, rises the broken words. It is not just any map, but a cartographic operation to orient oneself among the waves.

Tramandate di padre in figlio, leggibili solo da loro creatore, le carte delle onde erano d’uso corrente tra navigatori del Pacifico, più precisamente sulle isole Marshall. Scoperte alla fine del XIX secolo e da allora chiamate stick charts, bastoncini grafici, venivano costruite con steli di bambù: quando due bambù s’intersecano, l’onda cambia direzione frangendosi su un’isola.

Handed down from father to son, readable only by their creator, these wave maps were common use among navigators in the Pacific, more precisely on the Marshall Islands. Discovered at the end of the 19th century and since then called stick charts, graphic sticks, they were built with bamboo stems: where two bamboos intersect, the wave changes direction and breaks on the islands.

Le stick charts costituiscono una delle tappe fondamentali della storia della cartografia: pare che siano il primo reperto e tentativo di creare un sistema cartografico per mappare le onde. Un nuovo sistema, che ha generato nuovi codici rispetto a quelli usati nelle mappe rappresentanti la terra. 

The stick charts are one of the milestones in the history of cartography: they seem to be the first find and attempt to create a cartographic system to map the waves. A new system, which has generated new codes compared to those used in maps representing the earth.

Si tratta di un saper fare tramandato da padre in figlio, ed utilizzato per insegnare ed imparare a conoscere il mare. Queste mappe, d’altro canto, pur rappresentando l’Oceano, non l’hanno mai salpato: venivano infatti studiate ed imparate a memoria prima di prendere il largo, non venivano mai imbarcate nei viaggi tra le isole. 

Le stick charts nascono da modelli di pattern d’onde che i marinai traducevano in design simmetrici di linee e curve: da qui l’ispirazione per il progetto Bau, Wave, la voglia di rendere il frangente un motivo globale, d’accumulare le mappe, creare sul foglio un susseguirsi di cartografie come se fossero un susseguirsi d’onde. 

It seems to be a know-how handed down from father to son and used to teach and learn about the sea steams. These maps, although representing the Ocean, never sailed: in fact, they were studied and learned by heart before going out to sea, they were never embarked.

The stick charts were born from wave patterns that sailors translated into symmetrical designs of lines and curves: hence the inspiration for the Bau, Wave project, the desire to make the juncture a global motif, to accumulate maps, to create a succession of cartographies on the sheet as if it were a succession of waves.

Il progetto inviato al Contenitore di Cultura Contemporanea BAU17 si presenta come un quadrato di 29,7cmx29,7cm stampato su fronte e retro. Una cartografia delle onde lavorata digitalmente si trova quindi stampata sul fronte del foglio mentre, sul retro, si trova un codice QR riprodotto tramite la tecnica della linoleografia. Come due tappe nella storia d’una stessa tecnica: l’una digitale, da la schiena al suo predecessore, la stampa manuale. Riproducibilità, ridondanza. La matrice di linoleum scolpita alla mano racchiude il codice che ci porta qui, adesso. Il codice QR interviene e facendoci interagire con il supporto, attraverso la fotocamera del telefono, ci porta altrove, al largo, a navigare sull’internet.

The project sent to the Contemporary Culture Container BAU17 looks like a 29.7cmx29.7cm square printed on the front and back. A digitally processed wave cartography is then printed on the front of the sheet while, on the back, there is a QR code reproduced using the linocut technique. Like two stages in the history of the same technique: the one digital, gives the back to its predecessor, the manual printing. Reproducibility, redundancy. The linoleum matrix carved by hand encloses the code that brings us here, now. The QR code intervenes and by making us interact with the medium, through the phone’s camera, it takes us elsewhere, offshore, to surf the internet.

Per l’aneddoto, il sistema di codificazione QR (Quick Response, risposta veloce) ha una relazione particolare con l’onda: nato in Giappone nel 1994, è stato inventato da un impiegato della compagnia Denso Wave. L’onda ridonda. 

What’s funny is that even this QR (Quick Response) coding system comes from the waves: born in Japan in 1994, it was invented by Masahiro Hara, who worked for the Denso Wave company.
