Armatura typeface grows out of a study of Patrizia Vicinelli’s visual works, including à, a. A,. It is inspired by the thin lines and interrupted letters of her visual poems, which are stretched, agile, and broken. Although illegible at first glance, the font has a logical structure and can thus be decoded.
It is based on the phonetic table of Italian consonants: the letters are drawn according to their type [labial, parietal, dental…] and the deaf and sound consonants are distinguished by the presence or absence of a « scar »: the sound consonant = deaf consonant + scar.
The choice to link the phonetic dimension of writing to typography comes as a tribute to the poetic and performative practice of Patrizia Vicinelli, in whose work the oral dimension of the word is as important as its meaning.
